Radiation reaction at 3.5 post-Newtonian order in effective field theory

چکیده
We derive the radiation reaction forces on a compact binary inspiral through 3.5 order in the postNewtonian expansion using the effective field theory approach. We utilize a recent formulation of Hamilton’s variational principle that rigorously extends the usual Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms to dissipative systems, including the inspiral of a compact binary from the emission of gravitational waves. We find agreement with previous results, which thus provides a non-trivial confirmation of the extended variational principle. The results from this work nearly complete the equations of motion for the generic inspiral of a compact binary with spinning constituents through 3.5 post-Newtonian order, as derived entirely with effective field theory, with only the spin-orbit corrections to the potential at 3.5 postNewtonian remaining.

Radiation reaction and gravitational waves in the effective field theory approach
We compute the contribution to the Lagrangian from the leading order (2.5 post-Newtonian) radiation reaction and the quadrupolar gravitational waves emitted from a binary system using the effective field theory (EFT) approach of Goldberger and Rothstein. We use an initial value formulation of the underlying (quantum) framework to implement retarded boundary conditions and describe these real-ti...
متن کاملGravitational radiation reaction and balance equations to post-Newtonian order
Gravitational radiation reaction forces and balance equations for energy and momenta are investigated to 3/2 post-Newtonian (1.5PN) order beyond the quadrupole approximation, corresponding to the 4PN order in the equations of motion of an isolated system. By matching a post-Newtonian solution for the gravitational field inside the system to a post-Minkowskian solution (obtained in a previous wo...
متن کاملPost - Newtonian approximation for isolated systems calculated by matched asymptotic expansions
Two long-standing problems with the post-Newtonian approximation for isolated slowly-moving systems in general relativity are : (i) the appearance at high post-Newtonian orders of divergent Poisson integrals, casting a doubt on the soundness of the post-Newtonian series; (ii) the domain of validity of the approximation which is limited to the near-zone of the source, and prevents one, a priori,...
متن کاملConstructing a Mass-current Radiation-reaction Force for Numerical Simulations
We present a new set of 3.5 Post-Newtonian equations in which Newtonian hydrodynamics is coupled to the nonconservative effects of gravitational radiation emission. Our formalism differs in two significant ways from a similar 3.5 Post-Newtonian approach proposed by Blanchet (1993, 1997). Firstly we concentrate only on the radiation-reaction effects produced by a time-varying mass-current quadru...
متن کاملPost-Newtonian Lagrangian Perturbation Approach to the Large-Scale Structure Formation
We formulate the Lagrangian perturbation theory to solve the non-linear dynamics of self-gravitating fluid within the framework of the post-Newtonian approximation in general relativity, using the (3+1) formalism. Our formulation coincides with Newtonian Lagrangian perturbation theory developed by Buchert for the scale much smaller than the horizon scale, and with the gauge invariant linearized...
